What is Chiropractic?
Definition: Chiropractic is focused on restoring and maintaining proper spinal motion, alignment, and
posture in order to restore and maintain healthy spinal tissues and healthy nerve flow between the body
and the brain.
Chiropractic is the largest natural healing profession in the world. Millions of people have
experienced this non-surgical and drug-free approach to health and healing. One of the greatest men to
recognize the benefit of spinal adjusting was Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine (460-377 BC).
Hippocrates linked spinal manipulation with ill health. He stated, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the
requisite for many diseases.” Hippocrates believed that only nature could heal and it was the physician’s
duty to remove any obstruction that would prevent the body form healing.
The true essence of chiropractic lies in the fact that while many people have healed from many different
conditions with chiropractic care, it is not the chiropractor that was responsible for the healing. The real
healing was released from within each and every individual. People’s bodies work more effectively
when the spinal stresses from Subluxations were removed.
What Is A Subluxation?
Visualize a newly formed flower that is just beginning to blossom. This flower needs proper fluids and food
to grow to its full potential; however, there are a few kinks in the stem. This petals and leaves aren’t going
to be able to get all the food and fluids it needs to grow and over time, the flower may wither and die.
Similarly, billions and billions of messages travel from your brain to your body and from your
body to your brain through your spinal cord and the nerves that branch from it. These
messages flow to keep your body working properly. If there are distortions in your spine – there
are distortions in your spinal cord and nerves that affect important structures of the body may be
altered.
A Subluxation (sub-lux-a- shun) is a spinal distortion in which a vertebral segment is misaligned or
improperly moving causing a stress response in the body and interfering with nervous system
communication. Over time, an uncorrected Subluxation can result in decreased function and poor health.
What Causes Subluxations?
Subluxations are caused by stresses experienced, through the nervous system, greater than the
body’s ability to adapt. Our nervous system is responsible for relating the external environment to our
internal environment. Our external environment can be broken up into three main categories; physical
things (like trauma, posture, sleeping positions, exercise), chemical things (like nutrition,
prescription drugs, illegal drugs, pollution) and emotional/mental things (like relationship
stress, job stress). When you experience any of or a combination of these stresses beyond your
nervous systems ability to easily adapt you will create a distortion in the nervous system. Chiropractors
call this distortion a Subluxation.
What Are Some of The Warning Signs of Subluxations?
Subluxations can cause pain, muscle spasms, muscle weakness, and fatigue. However, some of the time,
you may not experience any symptoms. Often symptoms such as headaches, back pain, neck stiffness,
pain in your shoulders, arms or legs, numbness in your hands and feet, and various other symptoms can
be signs of subluxations.
Are There Different Types Of Chiropractors?
Yes. There are limited scope chiropractors and wellness chiropractors. Limited scope chiropractors focus
primarily on musculoskeletal issues, like back pain and neck pain. Their primary focus is relief and pain
reduction. Wellness chiropractors are not only concerned with pain relief, but are also focused
on health and vitality. They work to identify stress patterns in the body and in the lifestyle habits that
have caused these stress patterns. By identifying and releasing these stress patterns, the body is able to
work more efficiently, heal faster, and remain well longer. The doctors at Healthy Living Chiropractic
are Wellness Chiropractors.
What Do Wellness Chiropractors Do?
Wellness Chiropractors are trained to ensure your nervous system is free of spinal nerve
interference. They believe in whole body wellness. Your wellness chiropractor will discover any
spinal nerve interference within your spinal column and with specific chiropractic adjustments, will correct
them. Your body will then be free to heal, and express itself more fully and function at an optimal level.
Chiropractors will also educate you how you can live a healthier life, decreasing the major stresses that
caused your subluxations, which will help prevent you from re-creating the same problems over and over.
This is achieved through better posture (during work, sleep, sitting etc.), diet and nutrition, outlook on life,
stretching, exercise, and rest leading to a higher quality of life.
How Are Chiropractors Educated?
Chiropractors spend thousands of hours and several years mastering the art, science, and philosophy of
chiropractic. They are trained experts, specifically on how to locate and correct spinal subluxations. No
other profession is as skilled at adjusting the human spine as chiropractors.
In addition to the requirements listed, chiropractors must also complete courses in nutrition,
palpation, chiropractic philosophy and practice, and spinal adjustments. In total chiropractors spend
4,485 hours in the classroom, compared to medical doctor’s 4,248 hours, by the time they graduate from
chiropractic school. Before they obtain their degree, they must also complete approximately 900 hours of
work in clinic setting. To graduate with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, chiropractors must pass a 4 Part
National Board Examination. In addition, they must also pass a practical exam and interview conducted by
the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners in the state where they are seeking a license.
What Is A Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is the art of introducing a specific force in a precise direction, applied to
a vertebra that is subluxated. There are numerous ways to adjust a spine. Each of the various
techniques require a specific force and line of drive. The adjustment is delivered either by the doctor's
hands or a specially designed instrument. Some of the adjusting techniques are quick, while others require
a slow constant pressure. The doctors of Healthy Living Chiropractic utilize low force adjusting techniques
that are safe for all age groups from children to elderly.
Is Everyone Adjusted The Same Way?
No. From kids to the elderly, each individual is adjusted differently, depending on your body type, to
your specific health condition. Your chiropractor will take a thorough case history, ask specific
questions, and perform specific chiropractic tests to decide if you are subluxated and what technique they
will utilize. There are numerous techniques taught in chiropractic colleges throughout the world. The
chiropractors at Healthy Living Chiropractic are trained in several different techniques and will choose the
technique that is best for you.
Can I Adjust Myself?
No, you may be able to twist your neck and creating a “cracking” noise, however, you may be
injuring yourself. A chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction, to a specific
vertebra, and it is impossible to adjust yourself. Chiropractors are trained experts at detecting, locating,
and delivering specific chiropractic adjustments. When you or a friend “crack” or “pop” your back and
neck, it may provide temporary relief, but you have not actually adjusted a subluxated vertebra, and it
could be very dangerous.
Can I Speed Up The Healing Process?
In a way, yes. Though it is difficult to speed up your body's own natural healing process, by
following a few recommendations, you can give yourself the opportunity to recover quickly and
prevent problems.
It is important that you allow your body enough time to rest throughout the day and when you sleep at
night. It is also important to sleep in a proper position. The best way to sleep is on your side with your legs
straight and your head on a soft pillow. The next best way is on your back.
When you are lifting objects, always use your legs to lift the weight, not on your back. Make sure you are
strong enough to lift the object you have in mind. If not, save yourself future injury and ask for help.
It is important to eat a balanced meal. Proper nutrition will provide your body with the essential
components for growth and healing.
Try to keep a positive attitude throughout the day and realize life is full of ups and downs. Just when you
thought life couldn't get worse, it won't, it will get better. A positive mental attitude will alleviate stress and
allow clear thinking. Stress is a primary factor in causing subluxations. Last, participate in a wellness care
program with your chiropractor. Get checked on a regular basis to be the best you can be.
Why Is Chiropractic Care So Popular?
Over 25 million people have experienced the remarkable results of chiropractic care. This number
continues to grow as more and more people begin to take responsibility for their health care and choose
noninvasive, drug-free health care. Chiropractic is safe, effective, and gentle. It helps to awaken your
body’s innate healing potential, providing individuals with more energy, enhanced relaxation,
normalized immune system function, and greater life enjoyment. Best of all, chiropractic care is
about one-half the price of medical care.
